How To Grow a Cedar Tree From Seed.

Growing a Cedar of Lebanon from Seed: A Patient Endeavor

Growing a Cedar of Lebanon from seed is a rewarding but patient journey. These majestic trees are native to the mountains of Lebanon and Turkey, and cultivating them from seed requires specific care and attention.

Gathering and Preparing Seeds

  1. Obtain Seeds: You can collect cedar cones from mature trees or purchase them from reputable seed suppliers.
  2. Extract Seeds: Carefully open the cones to extract the seeds.
  3. Soaking: Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to remove any inhibitors.

Stratification

Cedar of Lebanon seeds require a cold stratification period to mimic winter conditions.

  1. Mix Seeds: Combine the soaked seeds with damp vermiculite or sand in a plastic bag.
  2. Refrigeration: Place the bag in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks.

Planting the Seeds

  1. Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix.
  2. Seed Placement: Plant the seeds about ¼ inch deep in individual pots.
  3. Light and Temperature: Place the pots in a warm, bright location, but avoid direct sunlight.

Germination and Care

  • Patience: Germination can take several weeks.
  • Consistent Moisture: Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Repotting: As seedlings grow, transplant them into larger pots.
  • Hardening Off: Gradually acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions before planting.
  • Planting: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil for your mature tree.

Remember: Cedar of Lebanon trees are slow-growing and can take many years to reach maturity. Patience and proper care are essential for their successful cultivation.
